Gender-Based Violence Recovery Services

The client is entitled to the following benefits:

1. counseling: In order to reduce immediate trauma and subsequent long term post-trauma stress disorder;
2. emergency contraceptives: To be dispensed to all non pregnant clients in child bearing age and not using reliable family planning methods;
3. post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for HIV infection: The Kenyan guidelines on rape and sexual violence recommend a duo-therapy for 28 consecutive days.
4. history taking, documentation and record keeping: These provide a critical link between the occurrence of sexual violence, the survivor, health care and the judicial system. When examining survivors of sexual violence, care should be taken to ensure that only minimal and unavoidable trauma is caused. More importantly, all bruises, abrasions and teeth marks will be carefully documented and the PRC forms provided at the VSP facility.
